MPOGCF staff participated in the Post-Planting Silviculture Treatment Course held at the Sultan Idris Shah Forestry Education Center (SISFEC), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), from 23 to 24 April 2026.This two-day course aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and technical skills in post-planting management, particularly in ensuring optimal seedling survival rates and healthy growth. The course was conducted by the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (FHAS) in collaboration with the Centre for Industry Relations and Networking (CIRNeT), UPM.Led by Dr. Johar Mohamed, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Forestry Science and Biodiversity, Faculty of Forestry and Environment, UPM, and Programme Coordinator, the course emphasised the importance of post-planting management as a critical phase in determining the success of forest restoration and habitat rehabilitation projects. The course covered comprehensive post-planting management practices, from the early stages after planting up to the fourth year of tree growth.Key areas included soil and nutrient management, water management, competition control such as weeds and invasive species, pruning techniques, as well as systematic monitoring of seedling growth and health. The programme adopted an experiential learning approach, with 80% practical and 20% theoretical components. Participants were actively involved in field activities across six planting plots representing different environmental conditions, including shaded and open areas.Activities included assessing seedling conditions, weed control, soil loosening as well as nutrient and plant health management. The course also highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring, timely interventions and efficient resource utilisation to ensure the success of restoration projects. These approaches are essential in improving seedling survival rates and reducing the risk of project failure in the field.Overall, the course enhanced participants’ competencies in planning and implementing restoration activities in a more systematic and effective manner, in line with MPOGCF’s commitment to strengthening biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability initiatives.MPOGCF extends its appreciation to UPM and looks forward to continued strategic collaboration in the future. ...
