Reforestation
Development of Peat Rehabilitation model for Sarawak Region (SDG)
BRIEF PROJECT
Development of peat rehabilitation is a project aimed to convert 50ha of unproductive ex-oil palm for 30,000 seedlings that are cultivated on peatlands to functioning peatland ecosystem services. Not only preserving its functions and values, this effort also will be supporting the element of ecological linkages of connectivity since the estates are also located adjacent to Labang Forest Reserve and Bukit Tiban National Park which are also renowned for its unique biodiversity richness.
PROGRESS AND PERIOD DATE
The project for the tree planting program, which aims to plant 30,000 seedlings, is ongoing; however, unforeseen weather conditions are significantly impacting the planting efforts.
The duration of this project is two years, from June 2023 to May 2025.
Forest Rehabilitation of Orangutan Habitat at Lower Kawag, Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, Lahad Datu, Sabah
BRIEF PROJECT
Restoring 2,500 hectares of degraded forest in Lower Kawag, part of Ulu Segama-Malua Forest Reserve in Lahad Datu, to be planted with fast-growing indigenous forest tree species and native fruit trees, for the Orang-utans habitats. This is done by engaging the local communities which also offers them an opportunity for an additional income stream and at the same time preserving the forest landscape. The programme will also enrich forest biodiversity in the selected area that will also act as wildlife corridors and wildlife refugia in the long run.
PROGRESS AND PERIOD DATE
The project is still on-going with planting and maintenance of trees planted within the restoration areas. The duration of this project is 10 years, starting from 2019 to 2029.
Projek Central Forest Spine (CFS, JPNK & Enggang)
BRIEF PROJECT
Fragmented forests caused by logging, road construction, and plantations threaten the extinction of iconic species like the Malayan tiger. To address this, the Malaysian government launched the Central Forest Spine (CFS) Master Plan, aimed at reconnecting fragmented forests in Peninsular Malaysia and boosting endangered wildlife populations.
In collaboration with the Kelantan Forestry Department (JPNK), the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) will undertake a 10-year reforestation project across 1,000 hectares of degraded Permanent Reserved Forest (HSK) in Kelantan. The project, funded with RM25 million from MPOGCF, will be divided into two phases: planting and tree care over five years, with local contractors and oversight by JPNK. This initiative aligns with the governmentโs CFS Master Plan to reconnect forests.
PROGRESS AND PERIOD DATE
The discussion between MPOGCF and JPNK will be held on 16th October 2024.
