MPOGCF’S BARN OWL INITIATIVE WON THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AWARD

PETALING JAYA – The Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) has been awarded the Sustainable Development Award (SDA) under SDG 15: Life on Land, organized by Junior Chamber International (JCI) Malaysia.

This prestigious recognition was conferred to MPOGCF for its flagship initiative, the Barn Owl for Smallholders programme or BOSI which supports oil palm smallholders in adopting barn owls as a natural and sustainable solution for pest management.

The SDA initiated by JCI Malaysia, is designed to recognize organizations, corporations and institutions that have made significant contributions toward advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The award was presented by Deputy Premier of Sarawak, YB Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian in a ceremony that gathered 30 outstanding finalists nationwide in Kuching on 21 Sept.

Hairulazim Mahmud, General Manager of MPOGCF said that this achievement serves as a catalyst for initiating projects that benefit stakeholders in the palm oil industry, including smallholders while at the same time enhancing the image of Malaysian palm oil sustainability.

He added that MPOGCF will expand the Barn Owl for Smallholders initiative (BOSI) through BOSI 2.0, which will involve the participation of a larger number of oil palm smallholders.

Deep appreciation to Dr. Hasber Salim and his dedicated Barn Owl and Rodent Research (BORG) team for their outstanding effort on the BOSI. Their commitment, innovation and hard work have greatly contributed to sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.

BOSI not only reduces reliance on chemical pesticides but also enhances biodiversity conservation and safeguards ecosystems for future generations.
