Report prepared by Zalifah Ramli
Senior Executive, Conservation and Sustainability Department
MPOGCF was invited as an observer for the programme titled “MSPO-Endorsed Lead Assessor Training for MPOB Officers”, which was held from 19 to 23 January 2026 at Hotel Seri Malaysia, Mersing, Johor.
The programme, attended by 72 officers from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), is a pilot project aimed at developing High Conservation Value (HCV) assessment methods and techniques that comply with recognised standards and align with the requirements of MSPO 2.0 certification, particularly for the implementation of internal HCV assessments by MPOB and MSPO.
MPOGCF was represented by the Senior Conservation and Sustainability Executive, Ms. Zalifah Ramli, and the Conservation and Sustainability Executive, Dr. Nur Fatin Khodri.
Key activities of the programme included technical presentations by MSPO, briefings on the use of maps and mapping systems by MPOB’s GIS team, as well as biodiversity and HCV assessment training at smallholder oil palm plots.
Participants were also guided on the preparation of comprehensive HCV assessment reports prior to presenting their assessment findings in groups.
MPOGCF’s participation as an observer provided an opportunity to gain insights into the MSPO-endorsed Lead Assessor training approach, assess the effectiveness of the HCV assessment methodology, and identify potential areas for improvement and strategic collaboration in capacity building and biodiversity conservation.
The programme is expected to strengthen collaboration among MPOGCF, MSPO, MPOB and relevant stakeholders towards the implementation of more systematic and credible HCV assessments that support the sustainability of Malaysia’s palm oil industry.
